What is the flu?

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. The best way to prevent flu is by getting a flu vaccine.

Protect your family during flu season. All children and adults ages 6 months and older should get the flu vaccine every year. Some people are at high risk, including people 65+ or people with chronic conditions.

A few quick facts about flu*

When is flu season?
In the United States, flu season usually occurs in the fall and winter. While influenza viruses spread year-round, flu activity often begins to increase in October. Most of the time flu activity peaks between December and February according to the CDC.
What’s in the flu vaccine?
Flu shots are made with either inactivated (killed) viruses, or with only a single protein from the flu virus. The CDC says flu vaccines cannot cause flu illness.
How long does flu shot protection last?
The body’s immunity to influenza viruses (acquired either through natural infection or vaccination) declines over time. According to the CDC, getting vaccinated each year provides the best protection against flu throughout flu season.

Keep your family safe this flu season by getting vaccinated
